Learning the Language

Everyone should try to learn a little bit of the local language. If you don’t have time to learn before you leave home, make time to learn a few words each day and have a contest to see who can complete the longest transaction without breaking into English.

Even very young children can be taught to say hello, goodbye and thank you in the local language. Those three words go a long way in breaking down cultural barriers and making locals dote on your children. When my son was one, he picked up on his own the fact that Italians wave differently than Americans... even then he was old enough to learn a little bit of the local language.
